Senior Legal Counsel

Reporting to the Chief Legal Counsel (Project Delivery), you will be responsible for providing project delivery legal support services across all business units in Downer’s Australian Operations.

You will provide strategic advice, legal services and support to Downer executives, project teams and management in relation to material project delivery issues including advising on contractual obligations and entitlements, claim preparation, disputes, settlements, and other project delivery issues.

About your role

Project Delivery related legal services include:

• Advice and support to Downer executives, including the Chief Legal Counsels and Group General Counsel and Company Secretary
• Strategic advice, legal services and support to Downer executives, project teams and management in relation to material project delivery issues including advising on contractual obligations and entitlements, claim preparation, disputes, settlements, and other project delivery issues
• Managing formal dispute processes (court, expert determination, adjudications, arbitrations, and mediations)
• Briefing and instructing external legal service providers and other experts and consultants
• Negotiating and documenting the settlement of disputes and transactional matters arising during project delivery
• Working with other Downer Group functions including Insurance, Company Secretariat, Tax, IR, Finance, Treasury and Audit
• Legal support to project governance initiatives and, where required, reporting to project governance bodies/forums
• Identifying and implementing lessons learnt, training on project delivery issues and continuous improvement across the Downer Australian Operations businesses

About you

• The ability to proactively build relationships with key stakeholders/ clients, peers and colleagues including mentoring and training junior colleagues
• Current practising certificate with 10 + years of post-qualified experience ideally within the Construction and Infrastructure sectors
• Preferably experience in both private practice and large in-house ASX listed organisations
• In-depth understanding of construction law and contracts
• Experience in advising on project delivery issues in the sectors in which Downer operates
• Demonstrated ability to provide clear and succinct advice which synthesises legal and commercial issues in a form suitable for an executive audience and capable of forming a basis for executive commercial decision-making
• High level communication skills including the ability to distil complex issues/ideas into clear and understandable propositions.
